DIY: How To Add More Personality to Storebought Mugs

These DIY painted mugs are perfect for hot chocolate by the fire or your morning coffee. But my favorite part of this project is how easy and inexpensive they are to make. A set of three mugs will only cost about $10, depending on the kind of mugs you decide to buy. Have your kids help you out on this one to create masterpieces that are truly unique.

Supplies:

  • Ceramic or porcelain mugs
  • Paintbrush
  • Pebeo Porcelaine China Paint (available on Amazon)

Instructions:

Step 1: Start by turning the mugs over and painting a small sample on the bottom, to make sure the color is what you are expecting.

Step 2: Next, dip your brush into the paint again and apply short (one inch) brushstrokes to the mug, in a random pattern. Set aside.

Step 3: As another pattern option, paint a larger area of the bottom of the mug. Then run a dry brush across the paint for more of a brushstroke effect.

Step 4: Another idea would be to create half stripes all the way around the mug.

Step 5: Allow the mugs to fully dry for at least twenty-four hours. (Paint will be dry to the touch after a few minutes.) Then bake for 35 minutes at 300 degrees F. These mugs will be dishwasher resistant once baked.

Enjoy with marshmallows and hot chocolate, and you’re ready to weather the winter in style.
