DIY: Glow in the Dark Party Piñata

According to my son Kai, a party isn’t a party without a piñata. Every year for his birthday, I make him some sort of piñata. This year is no different. Here is a step-by-step on how to make your own glow in the dark piñata. (It’s not as hard as you may think!)

Supplies:

  • water
  • mixing bowl
  • flour
  • newspaper
  • printer paper
  • balloon
  • string
  • black streamers
  • glue
  • scissors
  • fringe scissors (optional)
  • paintbrush
  • black paint
  • neon paint
  • neon green pom poms
  • hot glue gun

Instructions:

Step 1: Mix equal parts of water and flour into a mixing bowl. Cut newspaper into strips. Dip strips into the mixture and wipe off excess with fingers. Lay the strips on a blown-up balloon. Cover the entire balloon, leaving a hole on the top so you can fill with candy. Hang dry on a string.

Step 2: Repeat step 1 at least two more times. Make sure you allow the glue to dry completely before starting a new layer of the piñata.

Step 3: Cut printer paper into strips. Repeat step 1. (Note: It’s easier to paint over printer paper than newspaper.)

Step 4: Paint the piñata black. Hang dry.

Step 5: With your fringe scissors or regular scissors, cut fringes into the streamer no more than halfway through it.

Step 6: Glue the streamers around the piñata.

Step 7: Hot glue neon green pom poms and decorations onto the piñata. Fill with candy.

Step 8: Use a hole puncher or scissors to create four holes near the top of the piñata. Leave about 2 inches between the holes and the pinnate hole. Thread your string through the holes and tie together. Tie the hanging string into a knot. Optional: thread pom poms through the hanging string.
