DIY Hazelnut Milk Recipe

  • Nut milk is a great dairy substitute, and the homemade kind is super easy to prepare. By making a batch from scratch, you can control exactly what goes into your milk, which makes it better for you than the store bought stuff. Use your DIY hazelnut milk for your morning coffee, breakfast cereals, and smoothies.

    DIY Hazelnut Milk

    Servings: 1


    • raw hazelnuts: 1 cup (or nut of choice)
    • filtered water: 2 cups, plus more for soaking


    Step 1: Place raw hazelnuts in a medium sized bowl and cover with water. Allow to soak overnight.

    Step 2: The next morning, strain the soaking liquid. Run fresh water over the soaked hazlenuts. Place strained hazelnuts in blender, along with 2 cups of fresh filtered water.

    Step 3: Blend on high for about 1 minute, until almonds are completely crushed and the liquid becomes milky.

    Step 4: Line a fine mesh strainer with a cheesecloth (or nutmilk bag), and place over a medium sized bowl.

    Step 5: Pour contents into cheesecloth. Twist, and press until all of the liquid is extracted.


    Step 6: (Optional) Sweeten with honey or maple syrup. Refrigerate DIY nut milk in sealed container for up to 4 days.

    Tip: Spread leftover nut pulp on a baking sheet. Bake in the oven until the pulp dries out and turns into hazelnut meal. Use in baked goods.
