DIY Holiday: Craft Stick Trees

I used inexpensive wooden craft sticks in different shapes and sizes to acheive this modern, architectural gem that will last for years to come.

MATERIALS:

  • Foam cone  (I used 8″ 12″ and 15″)
  • Craft sticks  (I used batons and picks)
  • 2″ wood block
  • Glue gun
  • Small knife (not pictured)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Begin by placing a hefty amount of glue onto the end of the wood block

Place the block right in the center of the bottom of the cone.

Starting at the bottom, glue and stagger the sticks in a random manner, allowing them to hang over the bottom edge quite a bit for the first row.  I found it easiest to place a few inches of hot glue on the foam, working with about 4 or 5 pieces at a time.

Keep going around the first bottom row until you meet up the first stick.

Continue with the second row, making sure to cover up a portion of the first.

You can fill in little gaps by breaking the picks to size and pushing them up into the areas that need filling

As with most foam cones, the tops are squared, which won’t work for us, so that is where your knife comes in…

Just ever so slightly, trim the remaining foam into a tapered top

Now you can finish your cone with a nice, pointy top.  A tree top!

Adorn your favorite holiday table and admire your work.  I really love these trees and can’t wait to share them with our guests throughout the Holidays!
