6 Latina Celebrity Moms Share Their Favorite Parenting Advice

Shakira

“Be patient with yourself,” the mom said when asked by Latina.com to give advice for then mom-to-be Fergie. “Cut yourself some slack. Not everything is perfect the first month. There’s going to be a lot of things that you need to figure out as you go. And, you’re going to look like a sharpei when you get out of the delivery room. But, don’t get scared! Things go back to normal…well, almost. But, enjoy every moment. They grow so fast.”

Salma Hayek

“When Valentina was not even one month old, my aunt [gave me the best advice],” she told Good Housekeeping. “‘Put her to sleep yourself every night. Sing to her and cradle her in your arms and sit by her side—every night.’ Because one day you won’t be able to, and it’s going to happen really fast.”

Jessica Alba

“You accept that you’re going to make mistakes, that you’re going to try your hardest and you’ll love them with your everything,” the mother of two told People. “That’s all you can do.”

Nicole Richie

Richie is known for being honest in all aspects of her life, so it makes sense that her two children—Harlow, 6, and Sparrow, 2, are as well. “My kids operate best when I let them have a voice, and I really explain things to them,” she told Oprah. “Because really, kids want to be told the truth. They just do. They want you to be truthful.”

Gisele Bundchen

“You know how they say on the plane you have to put the oxygen mask on first and then put it on your child? I think it is the same, as a mom, to take care of myself,” Bundchen, mom of two, told The Sunday Times. “You can feel a bit guilty, but if I put my oxygen mask on first, if I’m feeling fulfilled and present and good about myself, then I’m going to be a much more patient, loving, understanding mother and wife. You have to fill your glass so that everyone can drink from it. That’s how I feel.”

Eva Mendes

The 41-year-old—who just gave birth to her first child, daughter Esmeralda, in September 2014—knows that it’s okay not to know what you’re doing, especially when you’re a new mom. When asked what her piece of parenting advice is, she answered: “I don’t feel like I’ve really earned that right. I want to respect all the moms out there,” she tells Women’s Health magazine. “They’re going to be like, ‘You know what? You’re a few months in. Just shut up.’”
