DIY: Painted Gold Elbow Patches

DIY: Painted Gold Elbow Patches

October 31, 2011

I love the addition of bright elbow patches on simple v-necks and cardigans but often I don't feel like pulling out the sewing machine. Here we've created a simple elbow patch made with fabric paint and a freezer stencil. Keep reading to see how to make it!

Supplies:

  • V-neck sweater or cardigan
  • Gold fabric paint
  • Freezer stencil paper (found next to wax paper at the grocery store)
  • Exact-o knife
  • Foam brush
  • Print-out of 2 ovals about 3 inches long

alt

Print out 2 ovals about 3 inches long and tape them on top of a piece of freezer stencil. Carefully cut out the ovals. Remember the part you save is the negative space. You can discard the 2 oval shapes you just cut out.

alt

Freezer stencil has a plastic coating on one side which sticks to fabric when ironed. Halfway down the back of one sweater arm, iron on the shape. Make sure it's ironed down thoroughly.

alt

Do the same on the other arm

alt

Slide a small piece of cardboard into the arm so the paint won't bleed through to the otherside. Apply gold fabric paint with a brush. Allow to dry and apply 2 additional coats or until it loooks coated enough.

alt

Carefully tear off the paper when dry and now you've got gorgeous new gold patches!
