Katie Noelle Holmes was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio by her parents, Kathleen, a homemaker, and Martin, a divorce attorney. The youngest of five siblings, Katie was a straight A student and was accepted to Columbia University, where her father hoped she’d become a doctor.
Katie did some modeling in teen years and was encouraged to take a trip to Los Angeles during “pilot season”. On her very first audition, she secured a small role in the movie “The Ice Storm”. Her big break would follow the very next year when she landed the role on the TV show “Dawson’s Creek” as Joey Potter. Katie almost passed up the part because the day she was wanted in Hollywood to audition was the same day she was to star in her school play “Damn Yankees”, but show creator Kevin Williamson was so sure he wanted Katie for Dawson’s Creek, they allowed her to send in an audition tape that she made in her family basement with her mother reading opposite her. Kevin said of Katie: she is a “unique combination of talent, beauty and skill that makes Hollywood come calling. But that’s just the beginning. To meet her is to instantly fall under her spell. The show enjoyed a successful run of six seasons.
Katie has starred in many movies, but her first hugely successful box office film came with her role in “Batman Begins”, which was released in 2005 – the year when Katie rose to a whole new level of fame. In April of 2005, just two months before the release of “Batman Begins”, Katie became a new media staple when she started dating mega-star Tom Cruise. The couple started dating in April and they became engaged in June, with Tom proposing to her on top of the Eiffel Tower.
They welcomed daughter Suri on April 18, 2006. The media grew restless as the world waited for the first photos of baby Suri. They finally showed off their bundle of joy in October in Vanity Fair; the issue was the 2nd best-selling issue with just over 700,000 copies sold. In it, Katie revealed that she was incredibly hurt over the outlandish stories that were made up about Suri’s absence from the public eye. “We weren’t trying to hide anything” “I do know what is being said in the press. This is my future. This is my family and I care so much about them. The stories are not okay. It eats away at me because it’s just not okay”
Katie and Tom married on November 18, 2006 at Odescalchi Castle in Lake Bracciano, Italy.
She continues to work in stage and movies, but finds every way to manage motherhood with her work. Suri is often seen on set with Katie, most recently as she filmed the TV miniseries “The Kennedys”. She said: “Suri comes to the set with me. She is amazing and it’s really fun to share making a movie with her. She brings so much to it. She is such a light that you instantly feel better.”
Katie works with several charities, including Stockings With Care and Raising Malawi. She was also one of the recipients of Love Our Children USA’s “Mothers Who Make A Difference” awards in 2009.
Tom and Katie remain one of the most sought after families by the paparazzi and media, but they take the attention in stride.
