Our Valentine’s Day date this year will probably include a homemade dinner and snuggling on the couch. Just because we are spending the holiday at home doesn’t mean we can’t get fancy.
This year, I’ll be starting dinner with a holiday variation on one of my favorite cocktails. The sidecar is a delicious drink from the days of Prohibition consisting of cognac, Cointreau, and fresh squeezed lemon juice. Since this time of year also happens to be the best time for citrus, I decided to switch out the lemon for a blood orange for an even tastier pre-dinner drink.
Valentine Sidecar Recipe
The blood orange is the key ingredient to fancy this cocktail up for V-Day!
By Ryan Foy
blood oranges: 2
red sugar crystals: for the rim of the glass
ice: to fill shaker
cocktail shaker: 1
cognac (or brandy): 3 parts
Cointreau: 2 parts
Citrus juicer: 1
Step 1: Start by cutting your blood oranges in half. Cut two wedges from one of your orange halves.
Step 2: Run your orange wedge along the edge of your glass to wet it. Pour about a tablespoon of sugar into a small bowl and dip the edge of your glass into the sugar to coat.
Step 3: Combine in your cocktail shaker a handful of ice, 3 parts cognac, 2 parts Cointreau, and 1 part blood orange juice. Shake vigorously.
Step 4: Strain your drink into your sugared glasses and enjoy. Happy Valentine's Day!
