Easy Homemade Graham Cracker Recipe for Desserts

Graham crackers are a necessary ingredient for many desserts. However, let’s be practical, getting store-bought crackers may not always be a feasible option for your pocket. Also, they might not be available at your nearest Target, but that shouldn’t stop you from whipping up that dessert. Here’s an easy graham cracker recipe that will be useful in times like these.

There is nothing better than freshly baked warm cookies. The fresh taste is unmatched, and let’s not forget the sweet cinnamony aroma that will fill your house! Moreover, this graham cracker recipe comes together in less than an hour, and your kids will enjoy cutting and shaping the crackers.

Top Tip: Make a big batch using this graham cracker recipe (depending on your batch size, you will need to double or triple the ingredients required). Save it in an airtight container for your dessert recipes, or have it with tea. You can store the homemade crackers in an airtight container for up to five days. Moreover, you can even freeze the unbaked dough, baking it at a later date.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 7 tablespoons butter, room temperature
  • 3 tablespoons whole milk
  • 1⁄3 cup (3 oz / 85 g) honey
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Preparation

  1. Line two large cookie sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt) in a large bowl.
  3. Add the butter to the dry ingredients and rub in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. You can use a food processor for this step, but don’t over-mix.
  4. Whisk together wet ingredients (milk, honey, and vanilla) in a separate bowl.
  5. Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until it forms a sticky and soft dough.
  6. Wrap the dough in plastic and chill it for at least 1-2 hours so it’s easy to roll. The longer you chill the dough, the better.
  7. Roll out the dough to a little over ¼ inch thick on a well-floured surface. Make sure to dust your surface and rolling pin regularly with flour to prevent the dough from sticking too much.
  8. Once the dough is rolled out, cut the dough into 2 x 5-inch rectangles with the help of a pizza cutter.
  9. Score the cookies down the center lengthwise, then in half across with a knife.
  10. Let your kids prick the cookies on either side of the scored lines with the help of a fork to create the classic graham crackers pattern.
  11. Transfer the cookies to the prepared sheet and bake them at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for roughly 10-12 minutes.
  12. Once baked, let the graham crackers cool on the tray for 5 minutes before transferring it to the wire rack to cool completely.

Eat them as it is or make the kid’s favorite S’mores, lime pie, or blueberry cheesecake with this graham cracker recipe. You have plenty of options to choose from. So, try making them with your little ones and share your experience in the comment section below.
