When Is the Best Time to Get Pregnant?

You can’t get pregnant without ovulating, plain and simple, and the best time to get pregnant is two days before you ovulate. In case you’re wondering what ovulation actually is, it is the process in which a mature egg is released from the ovaries and travels down the fallopian tube to meet a sperm. Hopefully, one of those sperm will burrow inside the egg, fertilize it, and then travel further down the fallopian tube to your uterus for implantation.

When will I ovulate?

Halfway through your menstrual cycle. “On average, most women ovulate 14 days later, IF they’re on a 28-day cycle,” says Adelaide G. Nardone, MD, FACOG, an ob-gyn at the Ryan Women and Children’s Center in New York City. Dr. Nardone advises women to have sexual intercourse anytime from days 12 through 14 (using Day 1 as the start of her period). “Sperm can live up to 72 hours, so it is better to have sex before day 14.” Not sure about your cycle or when you’re ovulating? There are several ways to test for ovulation.

When should I stop taking birth control?

That all depends on what you use. Something long-acting (like the Depo shot) could take longer to leave your system, while birth control pills you simply stop taking. Regardless, Dr. Nardone suggests waiting for at least one menstrual cycle before trying to conceive, in order to better understand your most fertile days.

Will certain sexual positions help me get pregnant?

Positions may not affect your likelihood of conceiving, but having an orgasm could increase those odds. Sex can become a bit routine while TTC, so why not try some new sex positions to keep it fun (and achieve the Big O)? Incorporating things like deep penetration and gravity may increase the sperms chance of reaching the egg, and will definitely make sex more pleasurable in the process.

Does frequency of intercourse make a difference?

Not according to Dr. Nardone. “But don’t get up right away,” she says. “Let the sperm sit there for a while.”

Does lubricant affect your ability to get pregnant?

Lubricant has been shown to slow down sperm, but if you do need something, one study recommends mineral oil rather than lube.

Should I modify my diet while I’m trying to get pregnant?

Keeping to a healthy diet, full of lean protein, fruits, and veggies will help boost embryo production and decrease free radicals. “Excessive free radicals in the body can cause DNA damage to eggs as well as deteriorate the egg cell membrane and inhibit fertilization,” says Jennifer Hirshfeld-Cytron, MD, an ob-gyn and reproductive endocrinologist with Fertility Centers of Illinois. Ramp up on antioxidants and Omega 3s in your diet, cut down on your alcohol and caffeine consumption, and definitely stop smoking cigarettes to increase your chances. Oh, and a healthy diet isn’t just for you; fruits and veggies will help your man produce stronger sperm, too.

Should I exercise while I’m trying to get pregnant?

Studies show that obesity can significantly affect ovulation and reduce fertility. By exercising daily and maintaining a healthy weight, you will increase your chances of getting pregnant. “Whether that is a brisk walk, short run, or workout class, exercising consistently will positively impact fertility and weight loss,” adds Dr. Hirshfeld-Cytron.

What is the best age to get pregnant?

Fertility does decline remarkably after age 30,” says Dr. Nardone, adding that your chances of conceiving naturally will drop over 50 percent after age 40. “The best indicator that you are healthy is that your period is regular,” she says. “That shows you’re in tact and still ovulating. Like a vital sign.”
