As a mom to a first-grader, I know all too well that studying can get boring, so thank goodness for apps that keep things game-like while reinforcing what’s happening in the classroom. Here are some apps I love for my son Jack, 7. I also tapped my mom friends who have older kids for their suggestions. Happy learning!

Homework Helpers: Best Study Apps Out There
Motion Math: Hungry Guppy
This app is great for reinforcing math basics for the preschool to first grade set. In my house, making math fun is huge. Thank goodness for under-the-sea apps like this one. Jack loves adding the bubbles and punching in the right answer because the guppy fish grows and grows. There are 15 levels that promise to encourage and reinforce basic math problems your child is working on in school. This is a stellar app for when Jack wants to play independently. The questions challenge him just enough that he doesn't need my help.

Organization is key when it comes to studying and that's why I love Poplet. Perfect for in the classroom and at home, this app helps students think and learn visually. Students can capture facts, thoughts, and images and learn to create relationships between them. Cool! More info Photo: Popplet
Storia
Jack has reading homework every night. To keep things interesting, I let him read ebooks, too. He thinks it's really cool that he can do his homework on the tablet. Storia gives you access to thousands of Scholastic eBooks for all ages and reading levels, so your child will grow with this app—not outgrow it.

The Oxford Dictionary
It's a no brainer to have this app on hand, because here's the thing: Nobody knows the meaning of every single word, especially when you get into SAT prep time! Your kid can use this app to look up words, check the spelling, and learn the origin of the word itself.

Solar System
Like any curious kiddo, my son loves learning about space in school. To make science even more fun and interesting I downloaded the Solar System app on his iPad. He loves looking at hi-resolution photos, watching videos and animation and listening to music. We like to read the text together (so I can brush up on our vast solar system too!) This is a great teaching tool for early education and beyond!
