Multi-Purpose DIY: Door stop or Desk Message Post

I hated to see them unused and started to play around with the pieces to see if I could come up with something useful and decorative with them. I love a creative challenge and am happy to say that I love what I created – now I have to decide which way I am going to use it.

My creation could be a place for me to pin my memos or photos on my desk to keep me organized.

Or I could use it as a decorative doorstop for my family room.  The best part of this project is that I didn’t have to buy anything new – everything I used I had on hand.

These are the items I had that were leftovers from previous home improvement projects – a section of a 4 x 4 post, 2 corner molding blocks, a furniture foot, and a glass cabinet knob.  All of these items can be bought at the home improvement store.

Other Supplies Needed:

  • Glue – Liquid Nails
  • White semi-gloss latex paint
  • Glaze in dark brown – I used one by Plaid Crafts in Bark Brown
  • Wood Screw – long enough to extend through and past the length of the glass knob
  • Drill and Drill bit

1. Drill a center hole on the bottom of the furniture foot and the small molding block.

2.  Screw the furniture foot into the small molding block using the existing screw that is already on the furniture foot.

It will look like this once the pieces are screwed together.

3.  Attach the rest of the pieces with Liqiuid Nails.  Center the large corner molding block on one end of the 4 x 4 post. Then glue the small corner block with the furniture foot on the other end of the post.

 4. I also found some decorative molding in my wood scraps that I cut to size to accent the top and bottom of the 4 x 4 post along with two floral wood medallions that I centered on the front and back of the post.

5. I used Liquid Nails to attach the molding and medallions to the post.  You could also use Tacky Glue.

6.  I used a tiny bit of caulk to fix the unmatched corners.

7.  I then applied two coats of white semi-gloss latex paint to the entire piece.  Once that was dry I sanded all the edges to roughen them up a bit so the piece would take on an aged look.

8. Since the wood pieces are all a different tone of wood I used a brown glaxe to make all the sanded areas look the same aged color.

9.  Just wipe it on with a soft cloth and then quickly wipe it away.  You can remove as much stain as you like and can apply more than one layer depending on the effect you want to achieve.

10.  Use a long wood screw to attach the glass knob into the top.

I turned a bunch of leftovers and scraps into – a  door stop.

Or a place to post my photos and reminders on my desk.

Do you have a bunch of scraps or leftover materials from previous projects that you can do something creative with?  You may be surprised with what you can come up with if you play around with them and look at them in a way that they were not intended to be used.  Re-cycle, Re-purpose, Re-Use – it is free!
