How To Make A Starburst Mirror

Starburst mirrors are very popular in decorating right now - you see them on the pages of decorating magazines, catalogs, and furniture stores.

They can be pretty pricey, but you can easily make one at a fraction of the cost using wood shims that you buy very inexpensively at home improvement store.  I found everything I needed at Lowes and Michaels.   I spray painted my shims as I wanted a white starburst to coordinate with my room, but you can paint them any color or even  leave it natural.

Supplies Needed:

  • 18 packs of wood Shims
  • 12-inch diameter wood floral/craft ring
  • 1 – 7-inch diameter mirror
  • An old beaded necklace
  • Wood glue and hot glue
  • Saw
  • Heavy Duty picture hanging hardware
  • Optional:  Paint or stain

You can arrange your shims anyway you like. I played with a few different variations, but settled on this design.   If you look closely there are 9 shims in each section.   As you put together each section use Elmer’s wood glue in between each shim and let the sections dry.

Once you have all the sections done – then glue the sections together to create the starburst shape.

Glue the ring onto the back of the glued together shims and let dry overnight.

Use white spray paint to paint the front and sides of the shim sunburst or leave natural.  When the paint is dry – glue mirror to center front.  Cut the extra shims into 1-inch pieces.

Spray paint them white and let dry.  You may need a to sand the edges lightly after cutting.

Measure around mirror and cut beaded necklace to that measurement.  Spray paint them to match shims.

Glue the necklace around mirror and then the cut pieces of shims as shown. I used hot glue.

Attach picture hanger to the back of wreath on top of the wood ring.

Hang.
