Frankenstein Cake Recipe

Using candies for the eyes and rivets makes it even easier!

Supplies:

  • 1 box cake mix or your favorite cake recipe (and accompanying ingredients)
  • 2 cups decorator icing
  • green food coloring
  • black food coloring
  • 9 x 13 inch pan
  • 4 Rolo candies
  • 2 Oreo or other sandwich cookies
  • 2 chocolate melt candies
  • small round decorator tip
  • pastry bag
  • 11 x 15 inch cake board (or piece of cardboard)
  • aluminum foil
  • tape

Instructions:

Step 1: Preheat the oven and mix up the cake batter according to the box or recipe directions. Spray the cake pan with flour cooking spray to keep the cake from sticking once it’s baked.

Step 2: Pour the cake battter into the pan, and bake the cake according to the directions for an 11 x 13 inch cake, (usually at about 350F for about 30 to 35 minutes). When the timer goes off, check the cake to see if it’s done, it may take an additional couple minutes. You know the cake is done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 3: When you take the cake out of the oven, let it cool for a minute or two in the pan, then turn it out onto a cooling rack.

Step 4: While the cake is cooling wrap your cake board (or piece of cardboard) with decorator or aluminum foil, and tape the edges of the wrap to the bottom of the board.

Step 5: Mix up a double batch of your favorite decorator icing (about 2 cups), color 3/4 of the icing green, and color a small amount of the icing black.

Step 6: Once the cake has cooled, flip it over and level the top with a serrated knife.

Step 7: Spread some of the green icing in the center of the cake board, then flip it upside down on top of the cake.

Step 8: Hold the cake board and the cooling rack together with the cake in the middle and flip the whole thing over so the cake is now on the cake board. Center the cake if you need to.

Step 9: Ice the entire cake green. If you want a secind coat, let the icing dry a bit and add another layer.

Step 10: Allow the icing to dry for 10 to 15 minutes then smooth it with a piece of parchment paper or a paper towel by rubbing gently over the top with your fingers. Don’t make the icing too smooth, this is Frankenstein and he’s a little rough around the edges!

Step 11: Put a little green icing on the base of two Rolo candies and stick them together to hold them. Repeat the process to make a second pair. Insert the double Rolos on each side of the cake about 3/4 of the way down for Frankenstein’s rivets.

Step 12: Separate the top off of 2 Oreos or chocolate sandwich cookies, and place the half with the icing on the cake for Frankenstein’s eyes. Discard (or eat!) the other halves of the cookies.

Step 13: Add a chocolate candy melt to the center of each cookie for the center of Frankenstein’s eyes.

Step 14: Add a small round decorator tip to the end of a pastry bag, and fill the bag with the black icing.

Step 15: Use the black icing to pipe Frankenstein’s hair, mouth, nose, and stitches. Enjoy!
