Healthy Whole Wheat Bread Recipe for Kids

Kids and adults alike love bread. Give them some simple toast for breakfast or a hearty sandwich, and they will gobble it down in minutes. Breads are so versatile that you can make several dishes with them. However, due to preservatives and/or other ingredients, moms often refrain from serving bread to their kids regularly. Here’s a simple whole wheat bread recipe you can easily make at home.

For best results, use white whole wheat flour to make this bread. And no, it’s not the same as all-purpose flour. White whole wheat flour is made of 100% whole grain, from hard white winter wheat. It is usually much lighter in color and finer in texture than regular wheat flour, perfect for baking soft bread. The texture of this healthy bread will be similar to that of refined flour, but it will be packed with the fiber and nutrients of a whole grain loaf.

Indeed, the bread-making process will be a little time-consuming, but the result will be worth all your efforts. Although the recipe calls for a stand mixer to make everything easier, you can mix it with your hands if you don’t have the appliance, and the results will be the same. Store the bread in an airtight container (it can be stored for up to a week) and enjoy it as and when needed without guilt.

Ingredients 

  • 4 cups white whole wheat flour
  • 1 packet dry yeast, active
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter, salted

Preparation 

  1. To make the whole wheat bread, grease a loaf pan (9″ x 5″) and set aside.
  2. Add 2 cups flour, yeast, sugar, and salt to the bowl of the stand mixture. 
  3. Heat water, milk, and butter until warm.
  4. Pour the butter and milk mixture into the flour mixture and mix at medium speed for 2 minutes. Scrape the bowl and mix for 30 seconds more.
  5. Add the remaining 2 cups of flour and mix on high speed for 2 minutes. Scrape the bowl and mix for 30 seconds more.
  6. Mix until a soft dough forms. Pour onto a floured surface and knead until smooth (about 8-10 minutes).
  7. Roll into a loaf and place in the greased pan. Cover and allow to rise in a warm place for an hour or until doubled in size.
  8. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and bake the bread loaf for 25-30 minutes until the top turns golden brown.
  9. Remove the bread from the pan and place it on a wire rack to cool before slicing.
