Too Young for The Avengers?

Joseph recently received his latest issue of Lego Club Magazine. Front and center was an “article” (I call them advertisements) on their latest line:

Superheroes.

Specifically, The Avengers.

Now, I’m going to be honest. I’m a comic book movie nerd to the enth degree. Watching the preview for The Avengers gave me goose bumps and in preparation of tonight’s showing, I watched Iron Man 1 & 2, Captain America, The Hulk (with Ed Norton, NOT Eric Bana), and Thor. (swoon)

Watching these films, I noticed one thing: They’re too old for my six-year-old.

Iron Man 1 & 2 have some pretty graphic scenes of blood and injury. Not to mention the drinking, the partying, Iron Man drunkenly blowing things up. The Hulk, while having a message of controlling one’s temper and trying to achieve inner peace, is also filled with gun violence and sexual tension. Then there’s Thor (swoon) which I thought would be one of the safest for Joseph to watch. Um. No. Monsters, injuries, oh my!

And Captain America – that bastion of all that is right and good, the weak man becoming as strong externally as he always was internally, standing up for what he believes in – has a disturbing face ripping scene that made me a little weak in the knees.

So, even though I love The Avengers and will be sitting in a darkened theatre tonight with a bowl of popcorn on my lap, I think my six year old is too young.

I just wish Lego would get the message too.

What do you think? Is six too young to see The Avengers?
