Parenting coach explains why reward charts at home may do more harm than good
A video on Instagram showed Lisa Bunnage, a parenting coach, explain why reward charts do not work at home as well as they do in a classroom. The video caught the attention of many people online. In the caption of the post, Bunnage noted down all the points she discussed in the video.
The parenting coach began by asking: “Do you recommend reward charts at home?”. She answered: “They work beautifully in a classroom, because it’s not personal, they don’t take offense to it.” She continued: “It’s not pointing the finger and saying they’re bad, because all 30 kids are in on it.” The parenting coach further explained, “At home, I believe reward charts are a total disaster.”
After that, Lisa Bunnage went on to explain what the effects of reward charts at home can be. She wrote: “You know what you’re saying to your child?” Continuing, she answered: “You’re saying ‘you’re normally rotten, but if you should happen to be good, you’ll get a gold star’.” She recommended the “BratBusters Behaviour Board” instead, explaining: “A behavior board says you’re normally wonderful, but if you should happen to do something rotten, I know how to deal with it.” The parenting coach then concluded: “See the difference? It’s sending a very different message.”
In the comment section, people have been showering the parenting coach with praise. They liked the way she explained all things parenting. “Omg you explain things so clearly. I actually can’t wait for my little guy to grow just so I can be a great parent,” penned one person.
