How To Fold a T-Shirt the Marie Kondo Way

A few years ago, my best friend and I read Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. We’re always on the hunt for some mythical way to manage all of our stuff, our kids’ stuff, and the other random stuff littered around our houses. I wish I could say we read the book cover-to-cover, but that’d be a lie. However, after skimming the book, we both pulled out one small, manageable nugget that has actually changed the drawer organization game in our households. We fold t-shirts the KonMari way.

Marie Kondo’s method has made it so much easier for my kids to find their own clothes without rummaging through the drawer and leaving a mess in their wake. Trust me, if you don’t do any other thing in Marie Kondo’s technique, the shirt folding method is the one to keep. I’ve maintained this system of t-shirt folding and organizing for two and a half years, and I’ll never go back. In case you haven’t delved into the Netflix show, let me give you a quick tutorial on the KonMari folding method.

The KonMari Method to Folding Tees

Step 1: Lay the t-shirt facedown in front of you. This way, part of the design (if it’s a graphic tee) will still be visible when it’s folded, making it easier for kids to know which t-shirt is which.

Step 2: Fold in the right side of the shirt, and smooth the sleeve flat. Then, fold the sleeve back half way. Repeat on the left side.

Step 3: Fold the neckline down to almost meet the hem of the shirt, leaving about an inch between the two.

Step 4: Fold the shirt again halfway.

Step 5: Fold the tee one more time so that it’s compact enough to stand upright.
