What Is the average newborn weight at birth?

The average baby weight for a full-term newborn is 7.7 pounds. However, any newborn that weighs between 6 and 9 pounds falls into the average birth weight range.

What is considered low birth weight?

A newborn is classified as having low birth weight if she weighs less than 5 pounds, 8 ounces at birth. Maternal health conditions and premature delivery are risk factors for low birth weight. Although some babies with low birth weight are healthy, it does increase the chances of health complications such as heart or respiratory problems.
