Drew Barrymore Gets Candid About Her Relationship With Her Mom

Drew Barrymore has always been open about her “free-spirited” upbringing by her mother Jaid and father John.  She had said many times how she looked forward to family and motherhood so she could give her own kids a sense of consistency that she never had.  This month in Marie Claire, Drew shares what her relationship with her mom is now and dishes on her husband’s very grounded family.

Drew’s upbringing made her value friendships more, “When I was a kid, everything was so unplanned, my parents were so erratic, and my world was so inconsistent. I hated growing up alone. I hated it … I don’t f––– anyone over. My friends are the loves my life.”

Drew, who is pregnant with her second daughter, shares that she and her mom, now 67, aren’t talking much.  “Ugh, I mean, my relationship with my mom is so complicated that … I’ve always been empathetic toward my mom, and I was even more so when I had a kid and we had a really amazing conversation about it. However, it hasn’t enabled me to lessen the distance. It’s the hardest subject in my life. I’ve never just been angry with her. I’ve always felt guilt and empathy and utter sensitivity. But we can’t really be in each other’s lives at this point.”

On husband Will Kopelman’s family, “I didn’t think I would ever get to experience that.  This is so safe and positive and healthy because they have their values intact. It was huge for me. And that’s what I want for my family.”

Random Drew Barrymore trivia: She’s the godmother of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love’s daughter Frances.  Also, Drew and Gwyneth Paltrow are both goddaughters of director Steven Spielberg
