Make Bedtime Fun With DIY Glow-in-the Dark Pajamas

Glow-in-the-dark apparel and accessories are fun year-round for kids, but if there’s one time a year to prioritize DIY glow-in-the-dark pajamas, it’s Halloween. It’s an easy way to get into a spooky spirit with eyeballs, monster faces, ghosts or skeleton bones. Or, keep it light-hearted with Harry Potter symbols, unicorns, stars, planets, dinosaurs and constellations. Either way, these make bedtime super fun and you’ll have no problem getting your kids out of their clothes and into the PJs at night with them. My boys ask to wear their new favorite pajamas every evening, and my daughter has already put a request in for her own glow-in-the-dark pair.

Need an easy way to get your kids excited about bedtime? Here’s how I made two DIY glow-in-the-dark pajamas in less than one hour.

Step 1: Trace a design (or design one yourself on Silhouette or Cricut software) on the glow-in-the-dark vinyl, and then cut the design. If you trace or cut without an electronic cutting machine, just draw on the backside so no pencil or pen lines appear on the pajamas. Also remember that the design needs to be mirrored (both if you trace or use an electronic cutting machine) because you will flip it and iron it on.

Step 2: Weed out all the excess vinyl that will not be a part of the design.

Step 3: Place the design on the pajamas right side up. Keep the plastic on it, and once in place, cover with a piece of parchment paper, and begin to iron. Make sure the steam is off. Follow the directions on the packages with the iron heat setting. I applied the cotton heat setting for about 30-45 seconds, let it cool for about one minute, and then removed the plastic. If part of the vinyl comes up when you pull the plastic, repeat the iron process again.

Step 4: Remove the plastic and your design should stick to the pajamas. Follow directions on the vinyl for washing, but generally speaking, you should wash them inside out, on cold.
