As mentioned, the “Copenhagen Islands” project will eventually see an artificial archipelago of floating wooden islands scattered hither and yon around Copenhagen harbor. Don’t expect every island to be identical – anything but! Many of the islands will be only large enough to support a single function or activity. Some of the proposed examples include a floating sauna island, floating garden islands, a floating diving platform, and even a floating mussel farm. Boaters, kayakers and swimmers are free to use (but not abuse) the islands according to their preferences, the only proviso being they should leave the islands in the same condition as they were upon their arrival.

“The clear waters of the inner city harbor are being enjoyed by thousands of people every day with water that is now clean enough to swim in and eat some fish from,” states the design team from Studio Fokstrot. “‘Copenhagen Islands’ will make the most of this new paradigm and provide a totally new type of public space for people to use as they please.”

The semi-free-floating nature of the islands allows for some creative opportunities for their use. “The islands could be brought together in the wider parts of the harbor for events and festivals,” adds a Studio Fokstrot spokesperson, “or moved to catalyze activity in newly developed or underused locations.”
