Over-development can severely strain the system, as was the case in 2004 when a small landslide forced the closure of the Varna-Golden Sands scenic route. The forces of nature will often expose such lapses and the results, as one can plainly see, are not pretty. In this case, a series of severe storms overwhelmed the area’s flood control plan, causing raw sewage and plain old garbage to be washed into the Black Sea, where vigorous wave action saw the more visible flotsam and jetsam deposited all along Varna’s main beach. Yuck!
