Rootless: Seven Seedy Abandoned Garden Centers

This abandoned garden center (or “centre”, to use the UK vernacular) in Westbury, Wiltshire appears to have been abandoned rather suddenly – there are still retail products on the shelves indoors, and potted plants (or what’s left of them) lined up ready for planting in the outdoor greenhouses. Perhaps the owner(s) didn’t have enough er, green on hand to pay the rent.

Flickr member Nick visited the disturbingly complete yet completely deteriorated garden center in January of 2010, which helps explain why there’s a lot more brown than green in these images. Gotta love the trashed greenhouse above – no problem getting sufficient sunlight now!

Another year, another abandoned Kmart garden center – this one was photographed in Bethlehem Township, PA by Flickr member jeffpiatt on September 4th of 2014. Kmart, aka “the savings place”, wasn’t much of a mecca for gardeners and the stores never tried to entice this niche market. Not that they had lasting success with the market as a whole but, y’know, just sayin’.
