Breathing Animated Solar LED Pavilion Lights Up the Night

What looks like a beautiful, delicate mesh sculpture by day comes alive at night with a network of glowing LED lights that change in response to its environment. The ‘SOL dome’ by Loop pH is a responsive light pavilion made from thousands of composite fibers woven into honeycomb shapes.

The lighter-than-air construction and soft illumination call to mind bioluminescent sea creatures. The lighting pattern on the structure changes according to CO2 levels at the site, so that when people are nearby exhaling carbon dioxide, the lights interact with their breath in a subtle way.

The underlying geometry of the pavilion is based on chemical and molecular bonds between carbon atoms, ad the whole thing weighs just 88 pounds. It was installed at Michigan’s “Fall In… Art & Sol Festival 2013,” the world’s first major solar art exhibition.
