Fresh Fig Sandwich

Ever heard of spreadable fruit? The fresh kind?  It’s a wonderful idea, and makes for an incredibly sweet and delicious sandwich for kids, without the extra sugar.  Why use a tablespoon of jam or jelly, when you can use fresh fruit? 

It’s prime time for figs right now, which is what gave me the idea.  My youngest boy has a big sweet tooth (inherited from me, I’m afraid), so the two of us tested this out for lunch!

It’s great to consider healthy ideas like this for kids — especially this September because it’s Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. And of course this is perfect for a lunch box!


  • 2 slices of your favorite bread
  • 1 tablespoon cream cheese
  • 2 small Mission Figs
  • A few spinach or basil leaves


Toast the bread and spread the cream cheese on both sides. Slice the figs very thinly and place on top of one of the slices of bread.  Add the spinach or basil leaves to the other side and gently put the sandwich together.

Makes one sandwich.

A few additional notes:

To maximize the nutritional value, use whole grain bread, and to lighten this further you can use “light” cream cheese.
