Living the Sweet Life with Summer Camp

Ah…summer! It’s a love-hate relationship that moms have with summer. Both moms and kids are counting down the days until there’s no more homework, the after school activities quiet down, there’s no packing or eating of brown bag lunches, and most importantly, there’s no schedule!

Summer is pure bliss…until the first week is over.

Then it’s a constant demand of: “I’m hungry!“; “What are we going to do now?“; “I’m bored!”‘; and my favorite, “This is the worst summer EVER!”

As a mom, I try to be prepared for all of these things, but literally after the first week, I’ve exhausted every craft idea, I haven’t had the chance to go grocery shopping to stock up on snacks, and the sibling squabbles have escalated to the point that I put myself in time out to get away from it all. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel—thank goodness for summer camps!

Kids are busy creatures by nature, so dragging them to every mundane errand on your to-do list isn’t the kind of summer entertainment that they’re looking for. Summer camps are the perfect option for both moms and kids to have the best of both worlds this summer. They can choose a camp that fits their interests like cooking, crafting, swimming, soccer, surfing, or even LEGO-building!

As a mom you can choose one that fits your schedule—from a full-day camp to a half-day camp—so you can get errands and laundry out of the way and have the rest of the day to do something fun with the kids. The possibilities are really endless when it comes to making a summer camp schedule that fits your needs as well as your kids’, and it will make for the most pleasant and fun summer you’ve ever had. In fact, my oldest daughter and I are embarking on a new camp adventure this year…overnight camp for one whole week. While I say we are embarking on the adventure, it’s really just her going away, but it’s an adventure as a parent to send away your kid for a week and leave them in the care of camp counselors.

While sending a kid to overnight camp isn’t for everyone, I think it’s the perfect option for my busiest kid. She needs constant entertainment as well as a schedule to go on for the day; it’s what makes her thrive at her best. With summer’s go-with-the-flow schedule, an overnight camp is what makes her a perfect candidate for going away, as well as giving her the confidence to be her own self and super independent in life. I remember going to one overnight camp for a week when I was about nine years old, and I came back with some of the best friends and great memories of jumping into lakes, riding horses, and learning how to take care of myself in a way that you don’t realize you need to at home.

So there I was reading through the packing list of what she needs to bring, and I came to the part where they suggest sending a care package. I was starting to cry as I thought of what I could put in a care package to her that would be small but meaningful, and then it came easy to me: candy is the sweetest gift I could send her. She loves it because she doesn’t often get it, but when she does it’s like the greatest thing she’s ever had.

This year I’m packing her a few of the Nestlé Crunch Girl Scout™ Candy Bars that are inspired by Girl Scout Cookies flavors, Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Crème, and Caramel & Coconut. We just recently found them in the store, and since she just finished her first year of being a Brownie and selling Girl Scout Cookies, we couldn’t wait to try them. The verdict as we took the first bite of the Nestlé Crunch Girl Scout™ Candy Bars together…chocolate smiles and giggles.

She will love finding the Girl Scouts Cookies flavor inspired Nestlé Crunch Girl Scout™ Candy Bars in her care package, and I know it will make her think of her last moments at home before she went away for the week. I’ll put enough in the box for her to share with the whole cabin because, just like her mom, she loves sharing a good thing. Summer camp can be a good thing for both parents and kids, especially when they come home talking about horseback riding, making bracelets, and sneaking chocolate bars late at night.
