Recall Alert: Trader Joe’s Walnuts

Most of the recalled walnuts are packaged in clear plastic bags and contain “best by” dates up to December 2015. They include: Trader Joe’s Raw California Walnut Pieces (16 ounces), Trader Joe’s Nuts Raw California Walnut Baking Pieces (16 ounces), Trader Joe’s Nuts Raw California Premium Walnut Halves (16 ounces), and Trader Joe’s Organic Raw Walnut Halves and Pieces (12 ounces), – and with “best by” dates spanning October 15, 2015 through December 1, 2015. The company website lists specific lot numbers and UPC codes involved in the recall.

The affected walnuts may be returned to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund. In their statement, Trader Joe’s said they were recalling these products “out of an abundance of caution.”

Kids are most likely to become ill from salmonella bacteria, according to the Centers for Disease Control, but infants, the elderly, and anyone with a weakened immune system is also at higher risk. Symptoms typically show up within 12 to 72 hours after infection and include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fever.
