If your infant has a fever or is showing signs of the sniffles, you may be wondering about the right infant Tylenol dosage to give your baby some relief. When it comes to infant medication, it is important that you take all precautions for the safety and well-being of your child. When planning to use infant Tylenol or any medication, you can always look to your pediatrician for answers.
What is the correct infant Tylenol dosage for babies?
There are helpful dosage charts online. However, for children under age 2, the manufacturer suggests checking in with your pediatrician, to ensure that you have the correct infant Tylenol dosage for your child’s age and weight. If you have any questions or are unsure of whether you have the correct information, contact the doctor’s office to speak with a nurse or an on-call pediatrician. Once you know how much to provide your infant, consider dispensing the medication under a bright light so that you can clearly see the correct measurement on the oral syringe. What is infant Tylenol?
Tylenol’s infant formula can provide temporary relief for pain and fever symptoms in children under 2 years old. Every 5 mL infant Tylenol dose of this over-the-counter medication contains 160mg of the active ingredient, acetaminophen. It comes in a liquid form with an oral syringe to make it easy for young children to swallow. Tylenol offers grape and cherry flavors for a better taste.
What symptoms should you look for?
If you’ve noticed that your baby is very warm, excessively crying or experiencing cold symptoms such as sneezing, coughing or a runny nose, check the child’s temperature first. It is helpful to always have an infant thermometer on hand when caring for a young child. A small infant Tylenol dose can be appropriate for mild fevers and minor cold symptoms. Call your doctor if your baby’s temperature is:
• Elevated at all for an infant under 3 months
• Higher than 104 degrees and doesn’t come down with ibuprofen.
Additional symptoms may be an indication of an underlying problem. Watch out for lethargy, rashes, difficulty swallowing or breathing and mood changes.
How long does it take for Tylenol to work?
Infant Tylenol should kick in within 45 to 60 minutes. After about two hours, check your child’s temperature to determine whether the fever has subsided. If it doesn’t go down or continues to get higher, notify your doctor right away.
When the correct Tylenol dosage is used, acetaminophen can help to treat your child’s symptoms of pain and fever. Follow the directions carefully, and do not give your child more than the recommended daily infant Tylenol dosage.
