DIY Heart String Art

Today’s heart string art DIY is perfect for a nursery or to give as a baby shower gift. I first saw the idea at a friend’s baby shower hosted by another super creative friend of mine, and then was inspired to figure out how to create one of my own another friend’s shower. Now I plan to make one for my new baby on the way. Here’s how to make your own DIY heart string art.

Supplies:

  • yarn
  • nails (1.75 or 2 inch work best)
  • wood (I buy the smallest square available at Home Depot and have them cut it in half—they do it for free!)
  • a hammer
  • sandpaper
  • a pencil

Instructions:

Step 1: Start by sanding the edges of your wood to make sure there are no splinters or rough edges.

Step 2: Draw your heart (I drew one on poster board until I had the shape and size I wanted, and then traced it onto my wood) lightly in pencil on your wood.

Step 3: Starting at the center point of the heart, hammer in your nails, spacing them out evenly, until you’ve done the entire outline of the heart. I use yarn as I go to make sure the nails are evenly spaced and the heart shape looks how I want it to. Remove the yarn outline when you’re done.

Step 4: Once you have your heart outlined in nails you need to wrap the yarn to create the heart. Using different colors of yarn for each row, start wrapping yarn around the set of nails that looks like the shape you want to create. Aside from the top and bottom rows (that make the curves and point of the heart shape) each row should be evenly spaced and wrapped around two sets of nails on each side of the heart (see photo below).

Step 5: Once you’ve gotten one row wrapped, move on to the next row, until you’ve gotten each row in each color complete and you see your heart. If one row has more or less yarn than another, wrap some more yarn to make them even.

Step 6: After you have all of the rows wrapped, feel each nail to ensure it is secure. Lightly hammer in any wobbly nails to secure them once yarn is wrapped.

Then you’re all done! You can paint or stain the wood if you want (I liked mine raw) or do all one color yarn, ombré shades of the same color, or all different colors to make a color-block effect like I did. Any way you go, your finished product will the perfect touch for your baby’s room!

And you don’t have to hang it in a baby’s room—it would be perfect in any room of your home, don’t you think?
