 Litteracy: Creative International No-Littering Signs

Note to self… stop doing anything! Yes, it’s come to this: we’re quoting the “wisdom” of Homer Simpson. What else is there to do when confronted by signs such as the one above, from Sabah, Malaysia, that forbids (from left to right) “no food or drink, no smoking, no spitting, less noise, no littering, no handphone (“handphone”?)”, and “no handbag”. To sum up, stay the heck outta Sabah! Flickr member Chun Xing Wong snapped this sign in June of 2010, presumably with a camera and not a handphone.

You know the Germans, they always make good… signs. Not to mention disturbing signs, like the one above located at the edge of a pond in Duesseldorf. Note the minimalist faces on the stylized litter aka illegal food and the caption: “Entenbrod ist Ententod”, which translates to “Duck Bread is Duck Death”.

You’ve all heard about how clean Swiss cities are… well, there’s a very good reason for that and we’d say it their anti-littering signs. Take the one above, captured by Flickr member Andrew Nash in the Swiss capital city, Bern. The text accompanying a stylized chubby junk-food-wrapper dumper translates to “Is that too complicated for you? We recommend to practice, practice, practice.” Yep, no more mystery about why Switzerland’s so clean!
