Gwanggyo Green City Plan by MVRDV

Gwanggyo is a planned suburb of Seoul, Korea. It’s projected to house about 77,000 inhabitants, and MVRDV Architects recently won a competition to design the city. Their design is a self-sufficient community featuring futuristic buildings and lots of green everywhere. The buildings all consist of offset rings, which serve dual purposes: providing terraces and creating indoor atriums which can be used for public meeting spaces. The unusual buildings will house offices, residences, shopping centers and everything else essential for urban life. Box hedges are featured prominently in the design as an easy, low-maintenance way to filter the air and reduce energy usage.
