47-Year-Old Mom Gets a Surprise: Triplets!

Lewis is a school cafeteria monitor with a 25-year-old daughter and a 14-year old son, and was not planning (or expecting) to get pregnant again at age 47. However, she was up for the happy challenge.

“It was a wonderful surprise once I was able to grasp it,” she told CBS Miami.

It’s rare for a woman of her age to get pregnant, and even more unusual to have spontaneous multiple births without help from hormone or fertility treatments.

Sharon developed high blood pressure during the pregnancy, so her doctors decided to deliver the triplets early, at 30 weeks. The babies — Dylan, Denere, and Denard —  were born at Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center on March 18. Each one weighed about two pounds at birth and spent time in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.

“It was a miracle that she got pregnant,” says Dr. Salih Yasin, an obstetrician who specializes in high-risk pregnancies and delivering multiples. “It was a miracle that she got three. And all of them are healthy and normal, and mom is just fine.”
