Kids Craft: Clay Ribbon Necklace

This is a really fun activity to do with preschool and young school aged kids.

It’s great for pre-writing skills by using a lot of small pincher type movements in their chubby little hands. It’s also a pretty handmade gift for a mother, grandmother, or little friend. Keep reading to see how to make it!

Supplies:

• Scupley or other oven-baking clay
• String
• Ribbon (optional)
• Scissors
• Scotch Tape (optional)
• Chopstick
• A cute kid

We were making this necklace for a niece of mine so my son picked out a few colors he thought she’d like in her necklace

Break off a piece and show your child how to roll it into a ball in their hand or for older children have them mold it into other kinds of shapes like cylinders or squares.

We made a dozen or so shapes.

Carefully poke a hole through the middle with your chopstick. You’ll probably have to reshape it a bit during and after this.

Make sure the hole is large enough to fit the string through. Make it a bit bigger than you think you need just in case

Set them on a baking dish and let them harden in the oven for 15 minutes at 275 degrees.

After they’re out of the oven and cooled cut a piece of string long enough

I put a piece of tape at the end to help my son string it through

I also tied a loose knot on one side of the string and let him go to town stringing the beads on

They’ll love this part of it and it’s great for pre-writing dexterity in their little fingers

Tie a piece of ribbon in a knot with the string on each side. Now you’ve got a gorgeous handmade gift!
