The Definition of Cute

Parenting Blog - Cute“Isabel is so cute,” Joseph said conversationally from the back seat. I checked the rear view mirror to see him staring out the window at the passing houses. I hoped we were not going to get into a boy/girl conversation.

Following that thought was the utter terror that this might segue into The Talk. The Talk I’m nowhere near ready to have.

“Oh?” I kept my voice neutral.

“She has big pupils.”

“What?” Had I misheard him?

“Pupils,” he said matter-of-factly. “Big pupils are one way to know something is cute.”

“Where did you hear that?”

“I just know it. Bunny rabbits are cute and they have big pupils.”

“You just know it?”

“It was also on Phineas and Ferb.”

“Oh.” For some reason I was relieved. The conversation couldn’t go that badly if we were talking Phineas and Ferb.

“And she’s tiny with a little tiny voice. My friends and I talked about it and she’s very cute.”

“Do you like her?”

“Of course I like her. She’s nice and very cute.”

“Yeah. I get that she’s cute.”

“Are you asking if I love her?” His voice was horrified.

“Well, yeah. I guess.”

“Maaa-ma.” I could tell he was losing patience with me.

“We’re just kids!” He exclaimed.

“Sorry.” I breathed a little easier. They’re just kids.
