5 Fabulous Outdoor Activities

FAMILY IN PARK

With the first sign of spring comes the desire to get out and get moving. If you're looking for a few fun outdoor activities for the family to enjoy together, try these out for size.

1. Go letterboxing.

Letterboxing is a type of outdoor treasure hunt. According to Letterboxing.org, there are about 20,000 letterboxes hidden in public, outdoor places across North America. Letterboxes are typically airtight food containers that house a stamp, an ink pad and a notebook. Letterboxers post clues for finding the boxes online at various Letterboxing websites. Once a box is found, the letterboxers put their stamp inthe notebook and stamp their personal notebook with the stamp hidden in the box.

2. Plant a garden.

Whether you start out with a window box or a full-fledged vegetable garden, get everyone involved in planting a spring family garden. Check out a book from your local library on gardening like Kids Garden! by Avery Hart and Paul Mantell, pick up some pint sized gardening tools, purchase your supplies and let this spring family fun project begin.

3. Spruce up the sidewalk. Get out the sidewalk chalk and create a family masterpiece. Have one person start the sidewalk art piece by drawing a line. Have everyone in the family take turns adding to it, one line at a time and see what you come up with!

4. Host a "Welcome to Spring BBQ."

Say "hello" spring and "goodbye" to winter by inviting the neighbors over for a traditional backyard barbecue. Have a sack race, play tag and turn up the music for some good old fashioned neighborhood fun.

5.  Head out for a family bike ride.

Tune-up the bikes, dig out the safety helmets and plan your route! Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy a leisurely bike ride with the family. If you have little ones that can't yet ride, check out Joovy's new Cocoon. It's a stroller, jogger, bicycle trailer all in one!

Whatever you do this spring, get up, get out and take advantage of the nice weather! It's good for the heart, mind and body.
