For Mothers Day Thrill Her With An E-Reader

I didn’t really think he’d follow through but stand-up guy that he is, I ended up with a Kindle on Mother’s Day morning.

I’ve been thrilled with my Kindle.  I was skeptical; while I’m a very technology-friendly Mom, I love to read and I thought I would miss the sensation of turning pages and holding a thick book in my hand.  Of course I had heard of many others having this fear and loving their e-readers so I thought I’d give it a shot and I’ve been thrilled.  I don’t miss “real” books at all.

For Mother’s Day – if she doesn’t have one yet – I recommend getting Mom an e-reader of some kind.  Because it’s just fabulous to be able to carry one small piece of technology around and to not have to worry about different sized books.  If she’s a Mom, trust me, her purse is big enough to store an e-reader and she’ll thank you for how compact and portable it really is.

So here’s the latest breakdown of the major contenders:

The Nook is available in black & white for $149 and the Nook Color for $249.

Lending books is allowed amongst friends and Barnes & Noble has a huge selection

The Kindle 3G with WiFi is $189.99 with free shipping.

Users download books via Amazon.  One of the things I disliked about the Kindle was that you couldn’t lend books.  Amazon has thankfully remedied this situation recently – you can now have up to 14 days to read a book “borrowed” off another friend’s Kindle.  Amazon is also offering a $25 Amazon Gift Card as a bonus promotion if you are buying a Kindle for a Mom for Mother’s Day.

If you want to go really crazy, get her an iPad

It’s a bit apples to oranges putting it in the same list with the Nook and the Kindle as the iPad is so much more – but the iPad does have e-reader capability (you can get the Kindle app!) and then of course she’s got an iPad with the ability to do tons of other amazing things she can do.  The iPad 2 is priced at $499 plus.
