With retailers already ramping up their holiday décor, displays and merchandise, it seems like Christmas is around the corner – and Halloween is barely over.

The holiday season feels like it is getting longer and longer, and while more time to prepare should mean less stress, more stress is often created. As you gear up for what’s often called the busiest time of year, keep these 5 tips in mind for helping to reduce holiday induced stress.

1. Stick to your budget

A longer holiday season means more time to shop and to spend money. Set a budget and stick to it. If you have trouble with impulse purchases, make a list. If you love to shop and tend to buy more than you plan to, don’t start shopping until December.  Avoid the stress that can come from overspending or going into debt by creating a holiday spending plan.

2. Keep sleeping and eating patterns consistent

Plan parties and functions around your normal routines and avoid the temptation to skip meals or naps. Children and adults who are well rested and well fed tend to behave better, which makes participating in holiday events much less stressful.

3.  Beware of relationship triggers

Relationships can be stressful year round, but during the holidays, the stress can be intensified because we tend to spend more time together. If you know you’ll be around the cousins that torment your child or around the sister-in-law that drives you nuts, try to limit your time together, set aside differences and keep conversations short, light and easy.

4. Stop and regroup

If you or your children begin to feel overwhelmed, stop and take a breather and avoid making any new holiday commitments. Release stress by going for a walk together, sending everyone to their rooms for 15 minutes of rest time, heading to a movie or doing something else that lends itself to a natural break from the hustle and bustle of the holidays.

5. Plan ahead

Set aside days and times for shopping, prepping, baking, cooking and visiting. Make lists to help you stay organized. Plan your meals out in advance. Avoid the stress caused by last minute scavenger hunts looking for forgotten or missing items.

While we all may dream of idealistic holidays, having a more realistic vision can be a huge stress reliever for all. Realize as families change and grow, traditions and rituals may often change.
