How To Add Chia Seeds To Your Baby’s Diet

Chia seeds should wear capes, masks, and tights because they are the superheroes of the grain world. Just two tablespoons of chia seeds are loaded with fiber, protein, calcium, zinc, and more. They’re full of antioxidants and omega-3s. Chia seeds promote bone health and weight loss. They give you energy, and they help boost strength. I mean, what’s not to like?

Adding whole grains to your baby’s diet is super important, but always check with your doctor before incorporating anything new. Once you’ve got the go-ahead, here are some wonderful (and delicious) ways to add chia seeds to your baby’s diet.

1. Mix chia seeds into yogurt or pureed fruit. Babies who are still consuming pureed foods will love the crunch chia seeds add to their favorite blends.

2. Add them a smoothie. Smoothies are a great way to “sneak in” fruits and veggies, so why not throw a few chia seeds into the blender, while you’re at it?

3. Make some chia pudding. Soaking chia seeds overnight in milk (almond milk, coconut, whatever you like) will thicken the seeds, turning them into a pudding that can be jazzed up with spices, fruits, or nut butters for a yummy treat. (Here’s how to make it with raspberries — yum!)

4. Mix chia seeds into homemade jam. It’s a great topper for toast, and an easy way to add extra nutrition to your kid’s PB&J.

5. Use them as an egg substitute. This is a great option if your baby is allergic to eggs. To do, mix 1 Tbsp chia seeds with 3 Tbsp water to make a paste that you can use instead of eggs in cookies, muffins, and other baked goods.

6. Give pancakes a nutritional boost with chia seeds. Adding them to your pancake mix is a great way to ramp up the nutritional value of this tasty breakfast staple.

7. Add them to your favorite meatballs recipe. Meatballs are great for babies that are old enough to enjoy finger foods. So try incorporating chia seeds in place of binders like eggs or breadcrumbs the next time you make a batch.

8. Whip up a batch of granola bars with chia seeds. If your teething cutie is interested in a little crunch, chia seeds make a wonderful addition to homemade granola bars; try this no-bake variation.

And, moms, if you’re looking to add chia seeds into your diet, too, sprinkle some seeds onto your salad or mix them into a spicy curry for a healthy, crunchy, chia feast!
