I didn’t think there was really a way to improve upon the perfect cup of hot cocoa—but I was wrong. I whipped up a batch of this hot chocolate while we were trimming the Christmas tree this year. To say it was amazing is an understatement. We’ll definitely be sipping this spiced caramel hot chocolate year after year when we decorate our tree.
Spiced Caramel Hot Chocolate Recipe
I didn't think there was really a way to improve upon the perfect cup of hot cocoa---but I was wrong.
- granulated sugar: 2 tablespoons
- water: 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon, divided
- ground cinnamon: ¼ teaspoon
- ground nutmeg: ⅛ teaspoon
- unsweetened cocoa powder: 1 tablespoon
- whole milk: ¼ cup
- whipped cream: about 1 tablespoon (optional)
Step 1: Add the sugar and 1 tablespoon of the water to a very small sauté pan. Place it over the lowest heat setting, do not stir it at all, and let it simmer gently until it's golden, about 5 minutes.
Step 2: Slowly whisk in the remaining 1 cup of water and bring to a boil. Turn the heat to low and continuing to whisk, then add the cinnamon and nutmeg.
Step 3: With the heat still on low, hold a fine mesh strainer over the pan and add the 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder to it. Gently sift it into the pan and whisk until it's evenly blended.
Step 4: Add the milk, whisk, and bring to a strong simmer.
Step 5: Pour in a large mug and serve. (And add a dollop of whipped cream if desired.)
