Q&A: Molly Sims Fills Us In

Molly Sims has a lot going on. In addition to running her blog and her new YouTube channel, the model and actress is about to welcome her third child, a boy, with husband Scott Stuber. (The couple is already parents to Brooks, 4, and Scarlett, 19 months.) Recently, she took time out of her busy schedule to chat with us about her difficult pregnancy, going through IVF only to get pregnant naturally (three times!), faking a hangover to hide that she was expecting early on, and more.

MT: How are you feeling?

MS: It’s been a hard pregnancy. I’m not going to lie. Until about August, I was gagging on my toothbrush. I was vomiting outside of gas stations and grocery stores. I was sick with Scarlett but not Brooks, so we thought for sure we were having a girl—but surprise, it’s a boy! Now I’m getting toward the last six weeks and I’m tired. I look like a bus hit me. I have an icy-hot patch on the back of my neck because I have a cold and I sat up and now I can’t move my neck. I feel like he’s going to come out of me, because he’s so low since it’s my third pregnancy. It’s been rough!

MT: Did you have a moment during this pregnancy where you thought, “What the hell have I done?!”

MS: Yes. At one point, I looked at my husband and said, ‘I am not going to make it.’ I woke up sick and I went to bed sick. I was green. I think there was just that moment of like, ‘WTF! What is happening right now?’ And also I’ve done everything in less than five years because I got married and then I got pregnant on my honeymoon. Four years and nine months later I’ll have popped out three kids. And I still have a career.

MT: You froze your eggs, went through IVF, and then got pregnant naturally all three times. Anything you’d change if you could do it all over again?

MS: I don’t know if I would do IVF again—but at the time I needed to do it mentally. I was worried. The ticking of the clock is a very real thing. I was like, ‘Do I do it now so I get the best eggs, even though I might use my frozen eggs first?’ I had too many choices in a weird way. But, I do believe in freezing your eggs, if you’re single or you’re not sure about having a baby or you’re not in a place where you want to have a child. It’s like an insurance policy.

MT: Is there anything you’ve done differently during this pregnancy, because you’re 43?

MS: We didn’t say anything for a really long time—not until I was 17- or 18-weeks-pregnant—because I am so much older and we wanted to make sure that the baby was okay genetically. It was hard to hide how awful I felt before we told anyone. There was one time where we got invited to a beach club and we brought the kids. I literally fell asleep while hanging out. People were like, ‘What is wrong with you?’ And I had to lie. I was like, ‘Oh, I’m not feeling well. I think I went out too late last night and drank.’ I was dying.

MT: How did you tell Brooks and Scarlett that you were pregnant?

MS: I didn’t, really. I was outside at the end of the summer and Brooks was standing on a step hugging me. His head was on my belly and he was like, ‘Mama, is there a belly in your belly?’ And I was like, ‘Maybe…’ And he was like, ‘I told you I wanted one! I’m so happy!’ He told us it was a boy way before we found out it was a boy. I think it was his secret wanting.

Scarlett is 19-months-old, so she really has no idea that she’s getting a little brother soon. We tried to break it down for her last weekend by taking her to the American Girl store and buying her Bitty Baby. She loved it. It’s so hilarious. You swear you’re never going to go to that place and then you do it.

MT: Are you nervous about juggling three little kids?

MS: I’m excited but I’m also nervous. I worry about Scarlett more than Brooks because she is used to getting all the attention as the baby in the family. At the same time, I can only do the best I can do. I’m giving them a present—another sibling that they’ll have for life. But it’s definitely nerve-racking. It’s nerve-racking to be older and delivering, too.

MT: You’ve gotten back in shape just in time to get pregnant again for the last five years. Has that been tough mentally?

MS: It’s a total mind f*ck. There’s a lot of pressure to look good in the business I’m in. I’m already trying to figure out how I’m going to lose the baby weight this time around.

MT: What will your post-pregnancy workout regime look like?

MS: I have a nutritionist on board that I really love and I’ve got a trainer on board that I really love. I’ve never worked with either one before, but some friends of mine have gotten really good results. It’s about figuring out what’s good for you and your body. Like, what was good for me and my body five years ago is not good now. It’s also about finding a diet you’re going to keep to, not one you’re going to do great at for a few weeks and then fall off the wagon. That does not help you.

MT: We love that you’re so honest about worrying about getting back into shape after pregnancy. So many times celebs act like it’s easy to bounce back.

MS: Are you kidding?! I’m very concerned about it, of course I am. I have spent the last three out of five years pregnant. I’m tired. My body is tired. I want to get back into a bikini, and I’m going to get there. It’s really hard work. I’m not going to lie about it. I know a lot of girls that do pretend like they bounce back without having to do any work, and it’s just not true. It’s so unfair for women and girls out there to hear that.

MT: So, is this really your last baby?

MS: Yes! My husband is getting a vasectomy but he doesn’t know it yet. He’s fighting me on it. There’s not going to be like, ‘Oh, this was an accident.’ No. It’s happening.

MT: It’s exciting to know for sure that your family will be complete, right?

MS: Yes—it is probably the best feeling in the world. I can deeply and truly say, ‘I am done.’ The wondering can drive you freaking nuts. There’s the clock ticking. There’s the ‘Oh god, I’ve got to do this again,’ the financial considerations, and so on. I have closure and that is a really good feeling. I am done having children after this baby is born, and I am happy.
