Your Kids Will Have Epic Fun Performing On This Sing-Inspired Backyard Stage

All three of my kids loved the movie, Sing. My daughter dreams of becoming a singer when she grows up, and my sons want to be like Buster Moon and own their own theater. In an effort to encourage their stage dreams, along with a tinge of desperation to keep them busy (and outside) this summer, I made a small DIY backyard stage. Now, my kids and their friends can perform like their favorite stars from the movie, and have hours of fun!

Anyone can make this simple stage. And when the weather turns cold, pack up the materials, and then re-use the stage again next spring and summer!

Here’s how to make your own DIY backyard stage:

Supplies:

  • 84-inch shepherd’s hook (2) from Home Depot (this or this will work)
  • White shower curtain
  • Curtain rod
  • Shower curtain rings, white
  • Rubber mallet

Stage accessories (optional):

  • Poster board
  • Boxes
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick (Elmer’s Xtreme)
  • Red fringe curtain, Oriental Trading Company
  • Cardboard
  • Gold spray paint
  • White cardstock
  • Duct tape
  • Hot glue gun and hot glue
  • X-Acto Knife

Instructions:

Step 1: Measure the length of the curtain rod. With a rubber mallet, hammer each shepherd’s hook into the ground at that approximate distance. Make sure the hooks are stable and straight.

Step 2: Hook the curtain rings into each hole on the shower curtain. Insert the curtain rod through all the rings. Set both ends of the curtain rod on the top hook. It should rest nicely between both hooks.

Step 3: Accessorize the stage. To do this, I added a red curtain, a Buster Moon figure, and a moon, as well as DIY cardboard speakers. (You can also hang drawings, pictures, and balloons — anything your kids love that represents that movie for them.)

Step 4: To make the curtain, first tape the red curtain along the hooks and rod. Cut one piece of the red fringe, and starting from the center of the curtain rod, pull the fringe to each side and tie the strip of fringe around the bundle of fringe. This will create a red curtain effect.

Step 5: For the speakers, trace the boxes on a piece of poster board. Cut out the square and rectangle, and then trace circular bowls inside the cut out. Cut out the circles, and then glue onto the box. Stack the boxes for a complete speaker set, and then set on the sides of the stage.

Step 6: To create the Buster Moon stage, first, freehand a crescent moon on a large piece of cardboard. Using an X-Acto knife, cut the moon out, and then spray paint it gold. Once the moon is dry, you’re ready to add Buster Moon. Copy and paste a photo of Buster Moon in Microsoft Word and make it as big as you can. Next, print it on cardstock paper. Cut out Buster Moon, and hot glue him onto the moon. For added strength, hot glue a small strip of cardboard behind Buster and on part of the moon. Cut a small hole on the top of the moon, and with a piece of string, hang him in the middle of the curtain rod.

Step 7: We have a Karaoke machine the kids love to use, but cheap microphones from Amazon are a great option for parties, or play dates when you need more than one.
